Over the years I have had several employees that have pushed me to address the cleanliness of the lab. Keep in mind we had spent tens of thousands of dollars on central vacuum layout, installation and large units. This certainly reduced airborne dust, but definitely did not do it adequately. Looking at the problem, I would have a counter top dusted off before going home and then wiping my hand across the same surface the next morning. This was an indication of just how much dust was not being captured by the central dust collectors and went airborne.
Airborne debris in dental labs will generally consist of silica. Silica is a primary ingredient of die stone and most ceramic materials. Inhalation of silica is the primary cause of Silicosis, a bad lung disease. As described by the American Lung Association, the effects of Silicosis “over time, exposure to silica particles causes scarring in the lungs, which can harm your ability to breathe.” In addition there are germs and microorganisms that may cause: influenza, common colds, sore throats, allergies (hay fever, ragweed), respiratory distress, chronic fatigue, headaches, congestion & coughing.
The solution for our lab, ADT, was we purchased several Quatro air purification systems. These systems circulate the air in our lab every 4 minutes and include HEPA filters which eliminate particles of less than 0.3 microns in size and are ideal for dental labs. Everyone wants to enjoy a happy healthy life and clean air in the lab will help.
There is a special promotion for Quatro air purifiers going on now until August 31, 2017. You can learn more here.
